What we do
Plenty of places advertise an MOT and then send your car somewhere else for the test. We don't. Rykel is a DVSA Approved Test Station, so your vehicle goes on our ramp, our tester inspects it, and the result goes straight onto the DVSA database.
That matters for one practical reason: if something fails, the person who found it is standing in front of you and can show you. You're not relaying questions through a receptionist to a garage two towns over.

What's checked
The MOT is a safety and emissions check against DVSA standards. It covers the condition of your vehicle on the day - it is not a service, and it doesn't tell you anything about the state of your engine or gearbox.
Engine condition, clutch, gearbox, and anything else that makes the car pleasant rather than legal to drive. That's what a service is for... and it's why an MOT and a service on the same visit usually works out cheaper and saves you a second trip.
Timing and legal bits
Your car needs its first MOT three years from registration, then every year after that.
You can have the test done up to a month minus a day before it expires and keep your existing renewal date. So if yours runs out on 14 September, you can test it any time from 15 August without losing those weeks. Worth doing if you're going away, or if you'd rather not be scrambling at the end of the month when everyone else is.
If your MOT has already run out, you can't legally drive the car except to a pre-booked test or to a garage for repairs. Driving without a valid MOT carries a fine of up to £1,000, and if the vehicle is in a dangerous condition that rises to £2,500 and possible disqualification. Your insurance may also be affected.

Fails and retests
Roughly a third of cars fail their first MOT attempt nationally, and the most common reasons are small: bulbs, tyres, wipers, brake wear. Most are fixable the same day.
We'll always tell you which repairs are needed to pass and which are advisories you could leave... those are two different conversations and we won't blur them.

We're on Purfleet Road in Aveley, a couple of minutes from the A1306 and easy to reach from the A13. There's parking on site, and a waiting area with wifi if you'd rather stay while the test is done - most Class 4 tests take 45 minutes to an hour.

Yes. Test it up to a month minus a day before the expiry date and you keep your existing renewal date, so you don't lose any time.
A fail (Major or Dangerous) must be fixed before the vehicle is legal to drive. An advisory is something wearing out that will need attention before long but isn't a fail yet. We'll tell you which is which and roughly how long an advisory has left.
If you leave the vehicle with us and we carry out the repair, yes — within 10 working days. If you take it away and return within 10 working days you get a free partial retest on the items that failed.

Only to a pre-booked MOT test, or to a garage for repairs. Otherwise it's a fine of up to £1,000.
